New Hampshire to Maine

Leaving Vermont was a little sad since the best foliage we had seen so far was here, but move on we did.  We crossed New Hampshire in short order.  After taking two days to cross a state like Texas, New Hampshire flew by in a couple of hours.  It was almost as pretty as Vermont, but the hills flattened out somewhat and the vistas were not as striking.

At Bristol, New Hampshire this huge rock extended to the edge of the roadway and had apparently been struck by more than one vehicle.  The Lord's Prayer was carved into it in 1891 by Dr. Greene.

We arrived in Scarborough, Maine on the south side of Portland in the late afternoon.  The next morning we left rather early to make the trip up to Freeport, home of L.L. Bean.

Bean has 4 different stores there, and we were prepared for that.  What we weren't prepared for was all the other outlet stores there.  Now, we've been to our share of outlet shopping centers and were never that impressed with the discount prices, but this was different.  The prices really were pretty good.  We had been warned about the narrow streets and parking, so we didn't bring our trailer. It was congested in the shopping district and difficult to find a parking space for a full size pickup truck. Forget bringing a trailer.

We stayed off of the interstate highway and drove along the coast on US 1.

This lighthouse near Portland was commissioned by George Washington in 1790. At that time the light was provided by burning whale oil lamps. Later it used kerosene, coal and finally several combinations of electric light beacons and fresnel lenses.

Back in Portland we discovered one of those rare finds. A restaurant that the locals know about but very few tourists ever stop at. Inside were four tables for two and outside were a couple of picnic tables.  We had seen plenty of signs advertising lobster rolls, but we didn't know what they were. We found out here. The guy at the counter, taking orders, took the time to explain them to us. We split the one and one half  pounder with sides of slaw, clam chowder and fries. Awesome!
